Physics, Engineering, Material science (PEM)

This pole conducts research in the fields of Physics and Nanosciences, Mechanics, Electronics, Electrical engineering, Materials science, Process engineering and Engineering and production sciences. This work has implications in areas of high societal relevance, such as health, energy transition, sustainability, industrial renewal and the information and communication society.

Strategic axes

The cluster covers a continuum of activities from fundamental physics to systems engineering. The thematic axes are:
  • Nanosciences and nanotechnologies, which cover a range of themes addressing objects on the nanometric scale.
  • Materials, structures and systems around the science and engineering of materials.
  • Condensed matter, which explores the electronic, magnetic, thermal, optical and/or structural properties of systems composed of a large number of interacting particles.
  • Microelectronics, micro-systems, electrical engineering, which brings together scientific problems associated with electrical energy and data.
  • Mechanics, processes and transfers covering a vast scientific and technical field, from the mechanical properties of matter, whether solid or fluid, to its implementation in systems and in process and environmental engineering.
  • The physics and engineering of living matter, which explores the mechanical, physicochemical, structural and statistical properties of biological matter.
The teams of the PEM cluster share a common scientific and technological culture, particularly with regard to:
  • Theory and numerical simulation
  • Instrumentation
  • Large instruments
The objects, devices, methods, instruments and studies developed within the framework of the PEM cluster are also of interest to the clusters.
  • CBS: Physics and engineering of life, Technologies for biology, Medical devices, Chemistry
  • PAGE: Instrumentation and modeling principles for Astrophysics and Geosciences.
  • MSTIC: Theoretical physics - mathematics interface, artificial intelligence, engineering - Computer science and Applied mathematics interface.
  • PSS: Industrial engineering and Social sciences, Energy systems and Social sciences.
  • SHS: Ethics and philosophy of science, Heritage materials.
