5-6 months - Starting in February/March 2025 - In France, almost 5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard are recycled and reused every year. During the recycling process, some of the starch used as an additive in the manufacture of paper and cardboard is released into the process water, which can become contaminated with micro-organisms. Thus, the development of a starch extraction process at the beginning of the paper recycling chain offers the dual advantage of minimizing the problems associated with starch biodegradation during papermaking operations, and saving a substantial quantity of starch (representing 5 to 10% of the weight of paper and cardboard) to produce polymers and molecules of interest. Such an approach is part of a circular economy and sustainable development dynamic.
