Multifunctional Biobased Assemblies

Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) Defense by Nathalie LAVOINE, Associate Professor at North Carolina State University (USA), on Tuesday, November 24, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., on "Multifunctional Biobased Assemblies: From Fundamental Building Block to Circular Material Design".

This manuscript synthesizes fifteen years of research and academic development (2010-2026), outlining my academic background, pedagogical and mentoring philosophy, a retrospective of three established research thrusts, and a strategic roadmap for the next decade.

My overarching ambition is to transcend the traditional boundaries of the pulp, paper, and packaging industries by positioning renewable nanomaterials, specifically cellulose nanofibrils and celluloses nanocrystals, as high-performance, viable alternatives to petroleum-derived plastics. Centered on deciphering the multi-scale process-structure-property-performance relationships of these lignocellulosic building blocks,

I herein present my future research as a unified Process-Induced Assembly paradigm, where advanced material functionality and safe end-of-life deconstruction are structurally programmed from the very beginning. This vision is articulated across four interconnected future themes:
(i) The Bio-Origin of Assembly to decipher how genetic blueprints and processing history govern the intrinsic colloidal self-assembly rules;
(ii) Process-Induced Architectures for Mass Transport Control to decode process-structure-diffusion relationships in nanoporous bio-hybrids;
(iii) Interfacial Assembly for Structural Colors to understand how substrate topochemistry and drying dynamics dictate assembly for color generation;
and (iv) Biological Fate and End-of-Life Degradation Mechanisms, to evaluate how physicochemical modifications impact environmental degradation pathways.

Altogether, this research trajectory and forward-looking roadmap underscore the immense stakes of sustainable materials research, solidifying the foundation through which I hope to keep inspiring and empowering the next generation to innovate with biomass.
